Under the rectorate of Ord. Prof. Dr. Muhittin EREL Ege University was opened in 1955, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İsmail ULUTAŞ was assigned as a first member to establish the Chair of Morphology who was working for Ankara University durng the period. İsmail ULUTAŞ's first assistants are Dr. Saim FALAKALI, Dr. Fuat YASA, Dr. Vahit İNCE and Dr. Erdoğan CİRELİ.

In 1993, Morphology Department was abolished with the decision of YÖK and two different departments were established as Histology-Embryology and Anatomy. With this separation, Prof. Dr. İsmet KÖKTÜRK, Prof Dr. Erdoğan CİRELİ, Assoc. Dr. Prof. Dr. Mine YURTSEVEN, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Meral BAKA, Assoc. Prof. Dr.Ayşegül UYSAL were appointed as a founding members to the Department of Histology and Embryology.

Under the chairmanship of Prof. Dr. İsmet KÖKTÜRK department of Histology and Embryology was first established in the audiovisual center, which is now called Bitam. The 1993-1994 curriculum and assignment continued in the same way as in the previous year. Light and Electron Microscopy Laboratories were established and intensive researches were started and new and comprehensive training programs in Histology and Embryology were started.
